ALMOST MIDNIGHT
You rest your left wrist on the top of the steering wheel and settle into cruise control around 72 mph. Aligning your rearview mirror to match your cruising posture while scanning the dark empty road for the next road sign. No cell reception and miles of coasting ahead. You've been selected to transport this "pristine" classic vehicle through the desert on a deadline. You decide to crank down the window for some cool summer night air. The glow from the instrument panel reflecting off the leather seats. The comforting hum of the engine paired with the occasional crackle on the FM. A smooth cloud of a ride through the gradual hills and empty space between cities. Just as you pass the halfway mark a sound starts to break through the radio static. A song you recognize comes through and you turn the volume up. A hit from decades ago, THE absolute perfect pairing to this late night drive. What are the odds? you think. The song pulls you into a whole vibe, so why hesitate to crank it up even more. The steering wheel easily doubles as your drumset and no one for miles can tell if you're in tune, so you go all out as the station continues to smash out your favs. To that one random wilderness creature, you were a flash of light in the night. But to you, miles of memories that will last forever and a hoarse voice that should only last a day or so. Now, fill in these parts. What car were you driving and where were you going?
